Samuell Haughton (b.ca.1637; m.(1) bef.1668, Esther ?Cock (2) 1669, Anne Gale; d.betw.1680 & 1686). Scrivener.
Resident in January 1658 in the parish of Allhallows Lombard Street.[1] First wife buried in parish church of Saint Leonard, Shoreditch, in 1668.[2] Resident in 1669 in parish of Saint Giles, Cripplegate, London.
Apprentice of the London scrivener Christoper Townesend [alt. Townsend]. Townesend is recorded in Rawlinson MS. D51 as a steward of the London scriveners.[3] Christopher Townesend is recorded in the same document as having another apprentice, John Byrt.[4]
The shop of Christopher Townesend was in Gracechurch Street in the city of London. A record from 1654 describes "the shop of Christopher Townsend, notary public, in Gracechurch Street, London" and identifies "James Heedler and Samuel Haughton" as servants to Townsend.[5]
A property described as "Mr Townsend's house" with a rental of £20 appears in the listing of the Inhabitants of London in 1638 for All Hallows, Lombard Street.[6]
The report of the committee appointed by a general vestry of the inhabitants of the Parish of St. Botolph Without Aldersgate (1733) identifies a house in "Knight-rider-streeet, alias Trinity-lane, in the Parish of St. Mildred Breadstreet" which was in the possession of the parish and recorded in the "old Vestry-book" as worth in 1650 £12-0-0. The same report states that the house in about 1658 was "sold to Samuel Haughton of London, Scrivener, by Henry Martin and James Aeton, Esquires, for £80."[7]
Samuel Haughton's first marriage appears to be to an Esther (surname possibly Cock), whose death in 1668 is recorded by John Strype.[8]
There is a record of the marriage on July 13th 1669 of Samuel Haughton, described as "of St. Giles, Cripplegate, London, Cit. & Scivener, Widower" aged about 33. His spouse was "Mrs Anne Gale, of Woodford, Essex, Spinster", aged about 19. The wedding was with the consent of Anne Gale's mother and was at Saint Andrew's, Holborn, London.[9]
There is a record of the burial of "Samuell Haughton, Feb 1685, in the parish register of Saint George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey.[10]
It is unclear whether the Southwark burial record is related to the will of Samuell Haughton, scriverner, proved on February 18th 1686. This will was written in 1680, when Haughton was sick, and gives no details of residence or assets, other than naming Anne Haughton, his wife, his sole executrix.[11]
