August 2012


August 1st to 31st

  • Train facilitators and advisors online


  • Work with facilitators to prepare online training material for associates


  • Dr Charlene Eska working with Colin Greenstreet, with input from Dr Elaine Murphy, on transcription and editorial policy. A draft document will be shared and discussed at the August 20th face-to-face meeting


  • Project leader & facilitators to create a digital backbone for the project, with all images checked for quality and readability, and meta data created and input into the chosen document platform (post August 20th & by September 3rd, following agreement at August 20th meeting on specific volume to digitise and transcribe)


  • Giovanni Colavizza (our project technical advisor) to implement chosen technology solution, in coordination with Colin Greenstreet and Dr Stuart Dunn, prior to September 3rd, with sufficient time for testing system and the training of facilitators on the system


August 20th

  • Face-to face one day meeting at TNA (August 20th) to look and feel the documents we will be working on, to meet TNA staff, and to practice technical and palaeographical skills. This meeting to consist of project facilitators, advisors, and those project associates who are available


  • Jo Pugh (TNA) is exploring whether web conferencing or dial-in TC facilities can be arranged


  • Dr Charlene Eska has asked whether the palaeography training session could be recorded and made available in the online MarineLives Project Manual. Colin is to ask Giovanni Colavizza to look into the technical capability of either the MarineLives wiki or the MarineLives website to support video clips

  • Kick off transcription work

  • First monthly on-line review conference using e-conferencing


  • Process and arrangements to be discussed at August 20th face-to-face meeting, and confirmed in September, once transcription work is underway


October 2012


  • Continuing transcription work


  • End October monthly on-line review conference using e-conferencing


November 2012


  • Continuing transcription work and beginning of linkage and enrichment work


  • End November monthly on-line review conference using e-conferencing


December 2012


  • Concluding linkage and enrichment work, and datamining of text


  • Mid-December monthly on-line review conference using e-conferencing


  • Target date for project completion is Friday, December 14th


January 2013


Last week of January

  • Suggested post project completion conference


  • Tentatively to be held at the National Archives, Kew (TBC)


  • Suggested invitees: all project team members and selected guests
