Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Sixty year old John Bennet deposed on May 6th 1659 in the High Court of Admiralty. He ws examined on an allegation in the case of "Croford against Middleton".[2]

The case concerned a dispute about the pay of Andrew Hill, who had been hired as a cook on the Elizabeth and Mary, but who had subsequently died. John Bennet suggested that 30 shillings a month "is usually given to mariners that serve in ships, in the place of cooke as the said Hill did on such voyages as the Elizabeth And Mary.[3]
