Biographical synthesis

Henderÿch Backer (alt. Hendrick Backer) (b. ca. 1591; d. ?). Mariner.

Residen in 1654 in Enkhuizen in the province of Holland.

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Sixty-three year old Henderÿch Backer deposed o January 11th 1654 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined o interrogatories on behalf of Ryley and company in the cause of "Ryley and company against the shipp or herring busse the Saint Peter, (Hendrick Backer Master)".[1]

The case concerned the seizure of the ship the Saint Peter (Master: Henderÿch Backer) en route from Oudenell in Norway to Amsyterdam. The ship was owned by her master, who had a one sixteenth share, and an Enkhuizen merchant namedv, who owned the remaining fifteen sixteenths of the ship. The ship's lading consisted of spars and deals laden in Norway.[2]
