1. lumber comming from Virginia in any shipp or shipps to this port of
2. London and reckoned and accounted to bee a tonne of tobaccoe And
3. during the sayd tyme it hath bin observed, comonly amongst Merchants and
4. others tradeing to Virginia that hee that Covenants to bring a tonne of
5. tobaccoe from Virginia covenants and agrees to bring fower Virginia
6. hogsheads, and that the freight of fower hogshea Virginia hogsheads
7. hath bin allwaies reckoned to be a hog and accompted to bee a tonne
8. according to usuall customs and after that rate hee this deponent
9. with within the tyme aforesayd divers tymes paid freight and X GUTTER
10. freight of others, and hee this deponent hath heard from divers
11. anncient traders to Virginia that that hath bin the Custome for GUTTER
12. many yeares before this deponent traded thither and further to
13. this article hee cannot depose.
14. Upon the rest of the articles of this allegation hee is not examined
15. by direction of the sayd mariner the producent./

18. To the first hee saith hee cometh to testifie the truth of his knowledge GUTTER
19. in this cause being soe required by Mr Marner the producent, and
20. saith hee is noe way of Kindred of allyance to Marner and saith hee is GUTTER
21. in debted to him some smale matter to him but what hee knoweth
22. not and that it will bee neither profitt nor preiudice to him either GUTTER
23. way soe ever this case bee adiudged hee not being interessed therein.
24. And otherwise negatively./
25. To the 2 hee saith hee hath knowne the shipp Alexander for about
26. a twelve moneth last past and was not at Virginia when shee was
27. there And therefore cannot further answere to this interrogatorie./

32. Examined upon the said allegation/
33. John Jefferies of London merchant aged forty yeeres or
34. thereabouts a wittnes sworne and examined saith and
35. deposeth as followeth videlicet./
36. To the 8th article of the sayd allegation hee saith that hee this deponent
37. hath for divers yeares last past used the trade of a merchant to Virginia
38. and thereby knoweth that it hath bin and is the usuall custome there the
39. fewer Virginia hogsheads of tobaccoe or noe moreare usually
40. reckoned and accompted to bee a tonne of tobaccoe and hee the
41. deponent hath often lost freight and taken freight of tobaccoe at the
42. sale from Virginia hee that agreeth to bring from Virginia a tonne
43. ther from Virginia And knoweth that amonst merchants trading
44. of tobaccoe is commonly understood to have agreed to carrie thence
45. fewer Virginia hogsheads of tobaccoe and saith the freight of a tonne
46. of tobaccoe to be brought from Virginia and the freight of fewer hogsheads.
