The third of May 1656.
The clame of William Bartelotte of}
Aus therdunn for his goods in the hare in}
the feild. Suckley. Budd.}
Examined upon an allegation given in on the
behalfe of the said Bartolette.
John Danckarts of Dergoose in hall Zealand
Mariner, stiersman of the said shipp the
hare in the feild, aged 39 yeeres or thereabouts
sworne and examined.
11. To the first article of the said allegation hee saith and deposeth that
12. about this time twelve moneth and XXXX the shipp the hare in the
13. ffeild arlate lay at haver de Grace taking in lading for the barr
14. of St Lucars or Cadiz there was a bale of merchandize laden aboard
15. her of the marke in the margent numbred 60; which hee knoweth
16. having seene a note or schedule of the lading, and in the alsoe a bill
17. of lading signed by John Keenn the master for the same by which it
18. appeares that the said bale was laden for account of William
19. Bartelotti of Amsterdam, besides this deponent tooke a note
20. of the said lading and remembreth the said bale, hee being stiersman
21. of the said shipp and present at her taking in of all her lading.
22. But the contents of the said bale hee knoweth not, and further
23. hee saith that the the said shipp with the said bale and the rest
24. of her lading setting saile from haver de Grace for the
25. barr of St Lucars or Cadiz, was met with by two of the
26. men of warr of this Commonwealth and seized and brought
27. to Portsmouth, and afterwards to London, and hee well knoweth
28. that the said bale was aboard when the said shipp was soe
29. seized and came with the rest of the said lading to XXXXXXX the
30. officers hands of this Commonwealth. And saith that about
31. eight monethes since, as the officers of prize goods came aboard
32. the said shipp as then lay at Blackwall to take out certaine
33. goods that were made prize, this deponent was present and
34. sawe the said bale of merchandize under the said marke and
35. number aboard the said shipp, but about a moneth since as the
36. said bale (being as it seemes ordered to be restored) was looked
37. for, it could not be found nor it was then remayning in the said
38. shipp, being by some meanes or other imbeazled and taken away;
39. while the said vessel was under the power of weighters ˹waiters˺ and
40. officers of this Commonwealth, and before John Keen as any of
41. his company were admitted to have any command of her. And
42. otherwise hee cannot depose.
