Biographical synthesis
Edward Brigges (b. ca. ?; d. ?). Mariner.
Master of the barke the Willing Minde. Previous master was John Humphreys, who replaced himself with Edward Briggs.[1]
Resident in 1657 in Shoreham in the county of Sussex.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Forty year old Edward Brigges deposed on October 28th 1657 in the High Court of Admiralty.[2] He was examined on an allegation in the case of "William da Grates and company against the shipp the Willing Minde Edward Briggs master and against Humphrey".[3]
Another mariner on the Willing Minde, twenty-seven year old John Humphreys of Bright Hampson in Sussex, stated that "the said producent John Humphrey went master of her for himselfe for a yeere or a yeere and halfes speace or thereabouts, and that hee and company put in the said Briggs master of her, who hee saith is now in possession of her to the use of the said producent and soe was at the time of the arrest allegate laid upon her at Bristoll".[4]
