Underpaymaster-general of the King of Spaine’s Army in Flanders

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Henrique Jorge Mendez, a forty-eight year old merchant and underpaymaster-general of the King of Spaine’s Army in Flanders, was resident in Antwerp in Brabant. He deposed on October 26th 1653 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on the behalf of Don Sebastian Cortizos in "The Clayme of Don Sebastain Cortizos of Madrid for one hundred and eleven sackes of wooll of the first marke and nine sackes of wooll of the second marke laden in the shipp Saint Augustin whereof Simon Johnson Abequert master taken by some of the Parliament shipps under the command of Captaine Badily."

The claim of Don Sebastian Cortizos was for Spanish wool seized by the English. Mendez stated that "he hath knowne the arlate Don Sebastian da Cortizos from his youth, and saith that he hath for twenty yeares now past bene and now is an Assentista of his Catholique Majestie the King of Spaine and doth furnish his sayd Majestie with moneyes for his occasions in Italy and fflanders". He added that "the sayd Sebastian da Cortizo was and is a Spaniard borne and lives in Madrid where he was borne and hath in habited for theis 20 yeares last and indeed all his tyme, and was and is a subiect of the King of Spaine and so accounted"

Mendez described the Allicant factors of Don Sebastian Cortizosis laded wool at Allicant on the Saint Augustine (Master: Simon Johnson Abaqaert) to be transported to Venice for delivery to Don Augustin de ffonseca, the proceeds whereof were to be used on behalf of the King of Spain in Italy and Flanders. The intended recipient of the wool was described as a Spaniard by birth, but living in Venice for the last sixteen years as a subject of Venice

Henrique Jorge Mendez deposed two and a half months later, on January 16th 1654, in the same court on behalf of "The clayme of Manuel and ffrancis Dirrickson for their goods in the Hope of Lubeck". In this case his name was recorded as "Henrique Georgia Mendez", again of Antwerp, and again aged forty-eight.

Mendez, on behalf of Ferdinando Montesines Assentista, of the kingdom of Spain, for restitution of Spanish wools and cochineal imported in the St. George and Salvador, Order in Council — as to wools brought in by the Peter, Swan, and Hope, and the proceeds assigned for the King of Spain in Flanders, but the vessels taken at sea, and restitution ordered in the Admiralty Court to Montesines, in spite of which part has been seized by attachment from the Court of the Sheriff of London, at suit of Antonio Duarte Rodrigues Lamego, merchant of Rohan, — that the wools be entirely freed, as decreed in the Admiralty Court, Approved 23 Feb. (I.92, No.144; I.75, pp. 685, 695.)"
