Biographical synthesis
Henderÿch Backer (alt. Hendrick Backer) (b. ca. 1591; d. ?). Mariner.
Resident in 1654 in Enkhuizen in the province of Holland.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Sixty-three year old Henderÿch Backer deposed on January 11th 1654 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on interrogatories on behalf of Ryley and company in the cause of "Ryley and company against the shipp or herring busse the Saint Peter, (Hendrick Backer Master)".[1]
The case concerned the seizure of the ship the Saint Peter (Master: Henderÿch Backer) en route from Oudenell in Norway to Amsterdam. The ship was owned by her master, who had a one sixteenth share, and an Enkhuizen merchant named John Louson, who owned the remaining fifteen sixteenths of the ship. The ship's lading consisted of spars and deals laden in Norway.[2]
