Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-two year old Garrett Johnson deposed on October 12th 1653 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on interrogatories on behalfe of Hugh Ryly and company in the cause of "Hugh Ryly and company imployers of the shipp the Mary of London John Welch captaine agains the shipp the Sharke wherof Garrett Johnson is master".[1]
Garrett Johnson stated that he was skipper of the ship the Sharke, which had been built at the cost of Marimus Tunison, her sole owner. The ship was said to be twenty years old. Johnson had taken the ship out on a fishing voyage with a crew of Hollanders and her lading consisted entirely for herrings, which she was taking back to her home port of Delfshaven. Johnson was to receive five guilders for every last of herrings he delivered.[2]
