Peter Mathews (alt. Mathewes; alt. Pieter Mattheus) (b. ca. 1618; d. poss. 1658). Merchant.
Elder brother of Middleburg and London merchant Baldwin Mathews.
Third child of London cloth merchant Baldwin Mathews (Bauduwijn Mattheus) and wife Anna Regoot. The children in order of birth were Maurities (Sep 5 1613), Anna (Apr 30 1615), Petrus (Peter) (Mar 23 1617), Sarah (Jan 31 1619), Baldwin (Balduinus) (Jul 2 1620), Joannes (Aug 25 1622), and Maria (Jan 16 1625). Following the death of Baldwin Mathews, Peter's father, his mother Anna Regoot remarried another London cloth merchant, Paul Ganne (b. ?; d. 1637).[1]
Peter Mathews married ca. 1640 Sara Vanbrugh [TBC], a daughter of London merchant Giles Vanbrugh. With the marriage in 1649 of Sara's sister Anna Vanbrugh, Peter Mathews became the brother-in-law of London merchant Simon Delboe (b. ?; d. ca. 1676).[2] Two children of "Pieter Mattheus" and wife Sara were christened in 1640 and 1645 in the Dutch church at Austin Friars, and a further seaven children were christened between 1641 and 1653 in the parish of Saint Martin Orgar.[3]
Probably resident in the parish of Saint Martin Orgar from at least 1641 to 1653, if not consierably longer. His residence was recorded in his 1655 High Court of Admiralty deposition simply as London[4].
The 1662 hearth tax record for Saint Martin Orgar's precinct shows Peter Mathews (and Bauldwin Mathews) 10 Hearths.[5]
