Biographical synthesis
John Gardner (b. ?; d. ?). Cooper.
John Gardner, despite describing himself as a cooper, went quartermaster of an English ship whose master was Mungoe Jackson.
Resident in 1655 in the borough of Southwark.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Forty year old John Gardner deposed on May 9th 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on behalf of Morens in a case brought against the Charitie and goods.[1]
The case concerned the seizure of the ship the Charitie (Master: Paul Paulson) by Mungoe Jackson. The master of the Charitie claimed his ship and lading were "of Gothenburg" and belonged to subjects of the Queen of Sweden.
John Gardner stated that "hee can speake noe language but English and a little broken dutch".[2]
