Biographical synthesis
James Presman (alt. Prestman) (b. ca. 1604; d. ?). Mariner.
Served as pilot of the Charitie of Lubeck when she was pillaged by pirates off Rotterdam in May 1650.
Resident in 1650 in Wapping.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Forty-six year old James Presman deposed on June 24th 1650 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on interrogatories "Ex parte Particy Swinocke citatis Londn mercatoris quoad ye Charitie of Lubeck in a case of assecuraconis".
James Presman stated he well knew the ship the Charitie of Lubeck (Master: Simon Sosse). According to Presman, the Charitie was en route from London to Danzig a month ago, when it was "sett upon and pillaged by pyrates or sea rovers in a small frigot commanded by an Englishman". The incident was about fourteen leagues off Rotterdam. The pirates pillaged packs of goods from the ship "close and hard packed". This Presman witnessed, since at the time he was serving as pilot of the Charitie. Presman did not know the contents of the packs "but beleeveth they were by the fashion of their packing fine goods".[1]
