Biographical synthesis

Francis Gythens (alt. Gittings; Gythings) (b. ca. 1635; m. ? Mary, pre 1669; d.?1684). Described in the preamble of the deposition as a cooper, but in the text as a winecooper.

Resident in the parish of Allhallowes Barking in 1655 and probably living in parish of Saint Olaves Hart Street between at least 1669 and probable death in 1684.

Probably married to Mary by 1669, by whom he appears to have had at least three children (Mary, 1669; John, 1670; Constance, 1671).

Record of burial of Francis Gythings, cooper, in the churchyard of the parish of Saint Olave Hart Street, dated February 6th 1684.[1]

Record of burial of Mary Gythings, widow, in the churchyard of the parish of Saint Olave Hart Street, dated January 8th 1688.[2]

Evidence from High Court of Admiralty

Twenty year old Francis Gythens deposed on July 24th 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. Gythens was examined on a libel in the case of "Travers against Pomeroy and against lighter of about 200 tunns whereof the sayd Pomroy is owner and against any other".[3]

Gythens states that he was employed by Gyles Travers, a London merchant, as a winecooper to assist in the unloading of wine into a lighter.[4]
