Biographical synthesis
John Knight (b.ca.1632; d. ca. 1665) was a London Grocer, resident in 1655 with his master, Lewis Byker (alt. Biker) in the parish of Saint Peter upon Cornhill.
His will was written on July 21st 1665 and proven in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on October 6th 1665[1]
In his will he describes himself as "Cittizen and Grocer of London", and states that he was in good health. He mentions his son John Knight, who was was under the age of twenty-one, and his brother-in-law Daniel Eyre of Bunbury in Oxfordshire, gentleman. He also mentions the younger children of his brother William Knight of Bodwrott (poss. Bodicott) in Oxfordshire, gentleman. He mentions his apprentice, John Packe.
His son, John Knight, is appointed sole executor, but with the request that his brother William Knight and his brother-in-law Robert Holland of Adberston in Staffordshire, gentleman, should prove the will and take on the administration of the estate, should he die before his son reaches the age of twenty-one. The same men were to have the guardianship of the son.
Four overseers were appointed - his kinsmen John Turton and Philip Turton of Arrewas, Staffordshire, gentlemen, and William Turton of West Bromwich and Collonel Richard Turton of Brunnwickham, Staffordshire, gentlemen. Requested the assistance of his loving friends Robert Mason of Bucklersbury, London, drugster, Thomas Bowdler of Shadwell, Middlesex, merchant, and William Shackerly of Lothbury, London, dyer.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-three year old John Knight deposed on May 20th 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on a libel on behalf of Titus Complaine, a Norwich apothecary, in the case of "Titus Complaine against John Brandlin John Blomfield and Alexander Scott".[2]
