The 5th of September 1654 [CENTRE HEADING]
The Clayme of Arnold Leon for his goods}
in the shipp called the Sphera Mundi taken}
by some ship or shipps in the imediate}
service of this Commonwealth: Suckly Budd}
Examined on an allegation given in by the sayd Suckely
Rp.
Joseph Ash of the parish of Saint Bartholomew
by the Exchange London Esquire aged 35 yeares or
thereabouts a witnes sworne and examined saith and
deposeth as followeth/
To the sayd allegation he saith and deposeth that hee this deponent hath well
knowne the allegate Arnold Leon for the space of these tenn yeares last or
thereabouts and in that space hath bin severall tymes at his the sayd
Arnold Leons house in Leege a place in Germany whereof the Bishopp of
Cullen beareth the tytle of Prince and is soe commonly reputed, and saith
during the tyme of this deponents knowledge of the sayd Arnold Leon hee this
deponent hath dealt with him by way of Merchandize and trade for divers
summes of good value and allwaies consigned the goods hee dealt with him for
to the sayd Leon dwelling in the towne of Leege aforesayd and for an
Inhabitant there and subiect of the sayd Bishopp of Cullen the sayd Arnold
Leon during all the tyme aforesayd hath bin commonly reputed And this
deponent hath heard a Common reporte that
the sayd Arnold Leon was borne in the sayd Towne of Leige, and this deponent
knoweth that hee did keepe a shopp in the sayd Towne as a Burgher there at such
tymes as hee this deponent was there, and as hee beleeveth doth soe still And
further hee cannot depose./
To the Interrogatories./ [CENTRE HEADING]
To the first Interrogatorie hee saith he hath knowne the sayd Arnold Leon for about 10
yeares last, and last sawe him in England about three or 4 yeares since, and saith hee
beleeveth him to be of the age of about 40 or 45 yeares And saith hee was a
married man when this deponent waslast at his house at Leige aforesayd, his
fathers name this rendent knoweth not and further saving his foregoeing deposition
hee cannot depose./
To the 2 Interrogatorie hee saith hee did cause the Clayme Interrogate to be
put into this Court which hee soe did by the sole direction and appointment of
the sayd Leon who writt a letter to this deponent to that effect And to the rest
of this Interrogatorie hee answereth negatively./
To the last Interrogatorie hee saith hee hath receaved severall letters from the
sayd Leon desyring this rendent to cause a clayme to be made in his the sayd
Leons name for the goods now in question and to presente the sayd clayme in
his behalfe which letters hee still hath in his Custody but how many those
letters were, hee at present remembreth not And further cannot answere
