1. merchants goods were made by the kinge of Portugall and soe was TO DO: CHECK GUTTER
2. of by the said kings officers and soe lost to the said master fflower, for hee TO DO: CHECK GUTTER
3. saith hee this deponent never received the same, and this de nor can TO DO: CHECK GUTTER
4. hee finde it, when hee went to seeke for the same after the ref release
5. of the Generall sequestracon, besides hee saith hee hath a certificate
6. (which was delivered him by command of the Provador) of the receipt
7. of the said nine bales or parcells into the Alfandigo, and another
8. certificate of all such goods as hee this deponent dispatched thence,
9. in which last certificate the said bale of fustians (not being dispatched
10. by this deponent) is not mentioned. And otherwise hee cannot
11. depose saving that the said bale was there worth (according to the price then this
12. deponent sold other of the same fustians that came therewith) Jno Bushell SIGNATURE ON SAME LINE AT END
13. 'and were of the same sort' 126 mil Res or thereabouts,'cleare of all chardges' and soe much hee
14. conceiveth the said master fflower to be damnified

his imployers touching dammadges sustained
by the king of Portugall in debts owing to them
in Lisbone and other parts of his dominion
at the time of the Generall sequestracon.}

The 29th of August 1654

John Bushell of London merchant
aged 37 yeeres or thereabouts sworne
before the right worshipfull the Commissioners
appointed in the Portugall businesse
and examined upon certain Interrogatories
saith and deposeth by vertue of his
oath as followeth.

31. To the first Interrogatorie hee saith and deposeth that hee this deponent
32. was resident in Lisbone in the yeeres 1649. 1650. 1651 and 1652, TO DO: CHECK GUTTER
33. and during which space hee was imployed and intrusted by diverse
34. English merchants as their factor, and had greate imployment from
35. them in the way of factorage, and many and greate quantities of
36. goods wares and merchandizes and of greate values 'were' sent unto him
37. by them and intrusted in his hands, and had likewise goods to a
38. considerable valew for his owne accompt./

39. To the second ˹and third˺ Interrogatories hee saith that in the yeeres 1650 and 165 TO DO: IN GUTTER
40. hee this deponent was at Lisbone kept in prison and under restraint
41. by order of the said king eighteene monethes and upwards, at and
42. during which time hee had sundrie debts owing unto him (for accompt
43. of himselfe and imployers) by diverse merchants and others dwelling
44. in Lisbone and other parts of the king of Portugalls dominion, (but
45. especially in Lisbone) to the valewe of twenty thousand XXit Res or
46. thereabouts; And that upon this deponents seizure and imprisonment
47. of this deponents person the said debts and summes were sequestred, and
48. continued under the said sequestracon about eighteen monethes.
49. And saith that by meanes and occasion of the said sequestracon, many
50. of the debts (which at the time of the first making of the said
51. sequestracon ˹repeated˺ were good) became bad and the persons owing them failed
52. and became insolvent, ˹and many of them ˹save severall˺ said then the said sequestracon was the
53. cause thereof˺ and all this deponents writings, bookes and
54. papers being alsoe seized and taken away by the said kings officers, many of his bills for
55. many of the said debts were embeazeld and lost during this deponents imprisonment, and others
56. of the said debtors tooke that occasion to denie payment ˹and others died˺ And saith that the Roll
57. or schedule hereunto annexed and showed unto him at the time of his examination
58. contayneth

61. contayneth the severall debtors names and Debts which are become insolvent and bad and the names
62. of such as have failed and of such as denie payment, and of such whose bills are lost, and the
63. whole dammadge of the said losse ˹in debts˺ occasioned by the said sequestracon, and saith the contents
64. of the said schedule were and are true, and hee referreth himself thereof, and
65. deposeth is to be made and taken as part of this his deposition. And saith that the
66. greatest part of the said debts belonge to this deponents imployers or principalls.
