sayd shipp Successe, and that hee the sayd Carpenter was on board when the sayd
shipp dove runne upon and broke the shipp Successe in manner aforesayd And hee
verily beleeveth if the sayd shipp dove had not mett with that mischance and runne upon
the sayd shipp Succcesse her bowe would not then have stood in neede of mending And
And (sic) further to this article hee cannot depose./
To the 7th hee saith hee this deponent sawe and well remembreth that the shipp which
fell fowle on the Successe as aforesayd had when shee soe fell fowle the picture of
an Angell in the head and had in her stearne the appearance of a fowle with white wings
And saith for that the sayd Master of the Successe and this deponent did at
their commeing to Newcastle view all the shipps there or neere thereabouts and found
noe other shipp then there having such markes as an Angell on the head and a dove on
the stearne, save the dove in this suite complayned of, hee therefore and for that hee sawe
the sayd shipp the doves Bowe then dubbed and mendeing and was informed by
divers who sawe her arrivall that shee came in thither upon the 9th or 10th day of
August last (which was a day of two after the Successe was suncke as aforesayd
hee verily beleeveth and is perswaded in his conscinece that the sayd vessell the dove
in this suite complayned of is the same vessell which did sinke the Successe as aforesayd
at the place called the Well as aforesayd And further hee cannot depose, saving his
foregoeing deposition
To the 8th hee saith that in his this deponents Judgment the sayd Vessell the at the tyme
of her sinkeing was about 80 tonnes and upwards and was a good tight vessell
and was with her tackle and furniture then worth fower hundred pounds sterling at the least, and
soe much hee hath heard the sayd Owners were offered for her before her goeing from
dover upon the voyage in question And hee also beleeveth that the Coales were on board her when
shee soe sancke would have yeilded if they had come safe to dover an hundred
pounds of like money And hee saith that there were in the sayd shipp when shee
sunke seaven fferkins of butter belonging to the Master and Company thereof and
some Salmon [?sXXXX] and some drye and Cloaths and sea Instruments belonging to the
Master and Company of the sayd shipp Successe (which consisted of fower men and a
boy besides the sayd master) which butter, salmon Cloathes and Instruments were well
worth at the tyme when the sayd shipp soe sunke twenty pounds of like money at
the least And further to this article hee cannot depose/
To the 9th and 10th hee cannot depose having heard nothing confessed to the effect arlate
saving what hee hath all ready deposed./
To the 11th hee saith hee referreth him selfe to the Registry of this Court and further
cannot depose./
To the 12th hee saith his foregoeing deposition is true/

To the first Interrogatorie hee answereth that hee cometh to testifie the truth of his
knowledge in this cause being doe requested to doe by the sayd de haze and Stock the Owners
and by david Adamson the Master of the Successe And saith hee was one of the Company
of the Successe and on board when shee was lost in manner aforesayd and was only a Common Mariner
in her and standing abaft the winlasse neere the scuttle on the same side where
shee received her hurt and thereby knoweth the truth of the oremisses predeposed the better being
soe neere the shipp the dove when shee runne upon the Successe And saith hee had
on board the Successe when shee sunke two firkins of butter 4 drye Salmon and a
great wooden bowle and some Cloathes And further cannot depose/
To the 2 Interrogatorie hee saith the first tyme hee did see the shipp dove (whereof Walter
Cable Interrogate was Master) was when shee did the damage predeposed of to the
shipp Successe at the place called the Well aforesayd and hath seene her about five or
sixe
