Week Two goals
In the second week of the MarineLives Summer Transcription Programme we will:
(1) Start our palaeographical work by transcribing two manuscript pages, one from HCA 3/46 or HCA 13/124 and one from HCA 13/63
(2) Strengthen our wiki writing and editing skills as we transcribe manuscript pages
(3) Look at two collaborative research projects which will run in tandem with our palaeographical work for the remaining nine weeks of the summer programme
Agenda for Sunday skype call, June 28th 2015
(1) Comments on last week's assignments (Sara, Grace, John, Nga, Brodie) (5 mins)
- Any techical or format problems still to resolve?
- Any learnings you would like to share?
(2) Paleographical contrasts and practice (40 mins) (Colin + all)
You are welcome to chose pages in advance that you would like the team to address on the call from each of the three volumes, or we will pick a page from each at random on the call.
- 10 mins on HCA 3/46
- 10 mins on [[HCA 13/124|HCA 13/124]
- 10 mins on HCA 13/71
- 10 minute discussion, comparing and contrasting.
We will take a page from each of the above three volumes and work through it in the team meeting, taking it in turns to read a sentence or two, and dealing with issues such as abbreviations, contractions/expansions, line breaks, capitalisation etc.
We will compare the different content types and writing styles in the three volumes and highlight potential difficulties as well as MarineLives and other resources to help resolve them.
(3) Page allocation for transcription during the week (all)
This coming week I would like you each to attempt the online transcription of one page from HCA 3/46 or HCA 13/124, and one page from HCA 13/63. We will agree the pages you want to tackle during the call. In the case of HCA 13/63 you may wish to tackle one of the three pages which you created and for which you uploaded digital images last week.
(4) Introducing two collaborative projects, and focussing on Project B: The three silver ships (10 mins) (Colin)
These projects will run in parallel with our palaeographical work. It is entirely up to you how much effort (if any) you wish to put into one or both of these, in addition to our collaborative palaeographical work, which is our principle focus. Dr Philip Hnatkovich, one of my fellow directors of the project will be assisting any team members in team one and two who wish to explore the topic of the Three Silver Ships.
