Examined upon the foresaid allegation on
the behalfe of his sais highnesse the
Lord Protector.

Captaine John Welch of London Mariner, aged
25 yeares or thereabouts sworne and examined
saith and deposeth as followeth
To the first article hee saith hee cannot depose, saving that hee doth
not knowe the shipp the Saint Paul arlate.
To the second, third and fourth hee referreth himselfe to the lawe and the
Registrie of this Court, and otherwise cannotd epose.
To the fifth and 6th hee saith hee neither knoweth the
shipp Saint Paul nor the dorsett frigot arlate nor any person named Martin Williams,
But knoweth one Imannol da Croix and Michaell Caron and became first
acquainted with them at dunquirke about 4 or 5 yeares since, And knoweth
one John Martin a reputed Wallon, who as this deponent hath bin informed went
commander in a private man of warr voyage by the name of Martin Williams,
And for the arlate Michaell Carren, hee saith hee is commonly reputed a native
of Ireland. And further saith that hee well knewe the arlate Captaine
ffenton to goe out of dunquirke in a man of warr voyage about foure
or five yeares since by a Commission from the pretended kinge of Scotts against
the subiects of this Commonwealth, but the name of the vessell hee
went out in or by whom shee was set out hee saith hee knoweth not
only hee sawe the said da Croix about and looking after the said vessell
when shee was soe setting out, but whether hee had any interest in her or
not hee saith hee cannot depose. And further hee cannot depose.
To the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th hee referreth himself to his foregoeing deposition
and to the Registrie of this Court, And otherwise hee cannot depose.
To the Interrogatories. [CENTRE HEADING]
To the first hee saith that one mr Taxwell came and spake to him this
deponent to speake the truth and be a witnesse in this cause, and afterwards
hee was spoken to and told by mr Budd and mr [?XXX] that hee was
to be examined therein. And otherwise negatively.
To the second negatively.
To the third hee cannot answer saving his foregoeing deposition to which hee
referreth himselfe.
To the fourth hee saith hee heard the said ffenton before his proceeding
upon the said voyage from dunquirke say that hee had the king of Scots his
Commission and that hee was going out by vertue thereof, and it was there
notorious that hee had a Commission from the kinge of Scotts, And
otherwise saving his foregoeing deposition hee cannot depose.
To the last hee cannot answer.
