Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-two year old William Welch deposed on June 14th 1656 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Thomas Allen Anthony Peniston and company in the case of "A Busines of examination of wittnesses on the behalfe of Thomas Allen Anthony Peniston and company owners of the shipp the King of Poland whereof ffrederick Johnson is master) against John Wright Jasper White Perient Trott Thomas Tomlinson John Butts Richard Chandler and George Watermann."[2]
The case concerned the King of Poland which was bound in June 1655 from the Bermudas to Viirginia and then to London. Tobaccoes were laden aboard the ship at both the Bermudas and Virginia.[3]
