Samuell Rutter (b. ca. 1624; d. ?). Merchant.
Resident in London in 1652
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Twenty-eight year old Samuel Rutter deposed on July 8th 1652 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalf of John Bousfeild in "A business of examination of witnesses on behalf of John Busfeild merchant touching losses sustaimed by reason of an imbargoe lade upon moneyes oweing to him by ffernandez Custain and Anthonio Joan and Company merchants and subiects of the King of Portugall by comand of the same Kinge".
The case concerned the London merchant John Bousfeild who traded with Portugal. In August 1649 Bousfeild had gone supercargo with his own cargazon aboard the Speedewell of London (Master: George Butcher) to be transported to ffaro in Portugal. Abraham Rutter went with Bousfeild as an assistant and interpreter.
Samuel Rutter stated that he went with Bousfeild on the Speedewell. The ship set sail from London mid-August 1649 and arrived safely at ffaro on October 1st 1649.[1] Bousfeild sold all his goods to Emanuell Fernandez and Antonio Joan and Company, merchants of Tavoola in Portugal, the purchasers promising to pay the sum of £3041-00-03 upon delivery of the goods. He received only £1641 in part satisfaction. Rutter stated that he was with Bousfeild at the time of the sale "and interpreted unto him and saw the bargaine or contact for the said goods and merchandizes". An imbargo was then placed by the King of Portugal upon all goods, wares, merchandizes and money belonging to or due to be paid to English merchants by any subjects of the King of Portugal. Again, as interpreter, Rutter was present when Bousfeild demanded payment for the outstanding £1403-00-03.[2]
