Barnetby-le-wold, or Barnetby-in-the-wold, lies in north Lincolnshire, roughly ten miles due south of Barton-upon-Humber and the Humber estuary.
The Kelke family was present in Barnetby-le-wold from at least the early sixteenth century, when it is likely that it had gentry status.
