In the Name of God Amen the fourteenth day of October Anno Domini one thousand six hundred eighty five and in the first yeare of the Raigne of our Soveraigne Lord James the second by the grace of God King of England Scotland ffrance and Ireland defender of the faith xx I George Torriano Esq: Citizen aand Merchanttailor (sic) of London perceiveing my selfe somewhat sick and weake in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory (all praise bee given to God) doe make and ordaine this my last will and testament in manner and forme following (that is to say)

FIRST and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Allmighty God my Creator through Jesus Christ my only Saviour and redeemer by whose mercy and merritts I doe assuredly hope to obtaine free pardon and remission of all my sinns and to inherit everlasting life my body I committ to the earth from whence it was extracted to bee decently buryed at the discretion of my Executrix hereinafter named in sure and certaine expectation of a joyfull resurrection at the last day

and as touching my worldly estate which God of his exceeding bounty hath endowed mee with I dispose thereof as followeth

IMPRIMIS I will that all such debts as I shall happento owe at my decease shall bee truly paid and I will that my Executrix shallbe allowed out of my estate all such moneyes as shee shall disburse in my ffuneralle not exceeding in the whole the summe of two hundred pounds besides the mourning herin after given and expressed, and my debts which I then shall owe being defaulted [??] and my funerall (sic) charges deducted I will that the residue of all and singular my goods Chattells plate Jewells Wares Merchandizes and debts to mee oweing and ready mony and all others my estate whatsoever it being all all personal estate) shall bee limitted (sic) and divided into three equall parts according to the Custome of the Citty of London one part whereof I give and bequeath unto my deare and loveing wife Susanne Torriano in just recompense contentacon [?] and Satisfaction of and for all such part and porton (sic) as shee by the said Custome or otherwise ought to have or can or may claime to have of all my said goods Chattells debts ready mony and other my personall estate (the whole divided as aforesaid)

I give and bequeath to and amongst my three sonns namely Charles Alexander and Nathaniel Torriano to and amongst them part and part like to bee divided the part and share of my said sonne Charles to bee paid and delivered to him within one yeare after my decease or soo soone after as my estate shallbee gotten in hee being now above the age of one and twenty yeares and the parts and shares of my said Sonnes Alexander and Nathaniell to bee paid and delivered [?] to them severally and respectively as they severally shall accomplish the age of one and twenty yeares and th'other part of my said goods and personall estate (the whole divided as aforesaid) I give and dispose as followeth (vizt)

IMPRIMIS I give and bequeath unto the Company of Merchanttaylors of the Citty of London whereof I am a Member the summe of fifty pounds Sterling and I forgive and release to the said Company my Corne (sic) mony

ITEM I give and bequeath unto the Governors of the Charity for releife of poore Widdowes and Children of Clergymen the summe of Twenty and five pounds Sterling

ITEM I give and bequeath unto Doctor Braford [CHECK THE PARISH REGISTERS] Minister of the parish wherein I now dwell the summe of five pounds to Doctor John Scott [?] Lecturer to the said parish forty shillings to M:r xactson [?] Leader to the said parish one pound to M:r Pare [?] the Clerke of the said parish one pound to the widdow and her sonne who execute the office of Sexten (sic) for the said parish one pound

ITEM I give to the Churchwardens of the parish of S:t Nicholas Acorns being the said parish wherin I dwell the summe of five pounds for the increase of the parish Stock and to bee applyed to such uses as the vestrey of the said parish shall appoint

ITEM I give to M:r Edward Browne Minister the Summe of five pounds and to M:r Andrew Xxdant the like summe of five pounds

ITEM I give to Nurse (sic) Wateren [?] who nursed my sonne Nathaniel five pounds for which her owne receipt under her hand without her husband shallbe sufficient discharge to my Executrix

ITEM I give to my honoured friend and kinsman M:r Alderman Paravicin the summe of fforty pounds to provide Mourning for himselfe and his two daughters

ITEM I give and bequeath for Mourning unto my loveing brother in law M:r John Capell tenn pounds to his sonne George Capell twenty pounds to his sonne William Capell and his wife to each of them tenn pounds to his daughter Mary Coward thirty pounds to his daughter Susanna and her husband to each of them tenn pounds a peece

ITEM I give to my Cosins William Charles and Elizabeth Proby to each of them severally the summe of tenn pounds a peece for mourning

ITEM I give to my loveing brother in law M:r John Logeroos [???] Alderman in Ireland the summe of thirty pounds to provide Mourning for himselfe and his wife and his sonne John and as to the rest and residue of all my said goods Chattells Mecrchandizes debts ready mony and all other my estate whatsoever I give and bequeath one Moyety (sic) thereof unto my said deare and loveinge wife Susannah (sic) and th'other (sic) Moyety thereof I give unto my said Children Charles Alexander and Nathaniel Torriano to bee divided betweene them equally and indifferently part and part like the part and share of my said sonne Charles to be paid and delivered to him within one yeare after my decease or soo soone after as my estate shalbee (sic) gotten in and the parts and Shares of my said sonnes Alexander and Nathaniell to bee paid and delivered to them severally and respectively as they severally shall accomplish the age of one and twenty yeares and my mind and meaning is

and I doe hereby will and appoint that the Interest and profitts of the severall portons of my said sonnes Alexander and Nathaniell shall dureing their respective minorities goe and bee applyed for and towards their respective maintenances Educations and Advantages provided alwaies (sic) [??] and my will and mind is that if my said sonne Nathaniel (sic) shall live to attaine the age of fifteene yeares that then my Executrix shall have power to take out of his portion (sic) any summe of mony not exceeding three hundred pounds for the binding him an Apprentice or placeing him forth to any trade profession or employement whatsoever at the discretion of my said Executrix provided allwaies alsoe and I doe hereby further will and devize as followeth (vizt) that it shall and may bee lawfull to

and for my said wife (who I intend to make my Executrix) at any time or times dureing soe long time as either of my said sonnes Alexander and Nathaniel shalbe under the age of one and twenty yeares to lend and put forth all or any part or parts of the portions belonging to him and them who shall be soe under age at Interest upon Security or Securities to bee taken in the name of my said wife and the Interest and profitts thereof to goe and bee applyed according to the trusts herein before declared and alsoe that it shall and may bee lawfull to and for my said wife and Executrix to compound for any debt or Duty that shalbee oweing to mee at the time of my decease and to acept of any part of any debt or duty in full satisfaction for the whole and for or upon any consideration whatsoever bee it lesse or more to release or discharge any debt or debts whatsoever which shalbee oweing to mee at the time of my decease according to her will and pleasure and that she shalbee answerable and accountable for not more nor any greater part of my debt or debts or estate than shee shall actually receive although shee shall or may give a receipt or release for more than shee shall receive and moreover that my said wife and Executrix shall not bee charged or chargeable with or for the losse of any summe or summes of mony soe to bee put forth at Interest as aforesaid or with or for the involuntary losse or miscarriage of any part of my estate

ITEM I make and ordaine my said dear and loveing wife Susannah Torriano full and sole Executrix of this my last will and testament and Guardian to my said sonnes Alexander and Nathaniel and finally I doe hereby revoke renounce and make utterly void all former and other wills by mee appointed ordained or made declareing and pronounceing this present testament to bee my true and last will

In wittnesse whereof to this my last will and testament contained in Seaven (sic) Sheetes of paper I have to every of the said Sheetes subscribed my name and at the top of the same sheetes have affixed my seale the day and yeare in the first sheete written

MEMORANDUM that before the signing and sealing hereif I give to M:r Henry Spencer M:r Joseph Xxuall M:r Peter Whitcombe and Robert Cary to each of them five pounds a peice and to M:r Peter Leney [OR, "Lenen" ? ] and M:r Joseph Duliver [TBC] each of them five pounds a peice Geo Torriano Memorandum that part of the first and second lines in the second sheete were obliterated and these words (after given and expressed) were interlined in the said first line of the said second sheete and afterwards these presents (sic) were signed sealed and published by the said George Torriano as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us and attested and subscribed by us in his presencethe fourteenth October 1685 Will Butler James Pickering Tho: Gilbert Scr
