Clemens Simpson (b. ca. 1607; d. ?). Mariner.
Late gunner on the ship the Minorie Busse (Master: John Ketch).
Resident in 1657 in Wapping.
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
Fifty year old Clemens Simpson deposed on February 27th 1657 in the High Court of Admiralty.[1] He was examined on an allegation dated December 1656 on behalf of John Ketch, the master of the Minories Busse in the case of "Ketch and others against the shipp The Minories and against James Boydon".[2]
Clemens Simpson stated that he ws hired in 1653 as gunner of the Minorie Busse (Master: John Ketch) by Captaine John ffearnes, who was reputed to be the husband and agent of the Corporation of London. He was hired to go on a fishing voyage. John ffearnes had supposedly fitted out several ships for similar voyages on behalf of the Corporation of London.
Clemens Simposn reported that at ffearnes order he went to the house of a ship chandler in Wapping owned by Valentine King and fetched "forty pounds of powder. fifteene round shott, some musketts, swords and quarter pikes, three or fower lanthornes, some shott=basketts two skeines of match, fower paires of bandoliers (not remembering the particulars otherwise than as aforesaid) save that hee alsoe had a sponge wor[XX] and ladle for the gunne aboard the said shipp".[3]
