Touching a Losse susteyned in the shipp the hopewell of}
London, (William Watts Master) and the lading therein}
sustained by a dutchman of Warr}

Master of the said shipp the hopewell
aged 28. yeares or thereabouts
William Gayner of Wapping in the County
of Middlesex Mariner John Waymouth of Wapping
aforesaid Boateswaine of the said shipp, George Lee
of Westminster Chirurgion of the said shipp
henry Page of New-Castle upon Tyne Mariner
daniel Barton of Rederith in the Countie of

Losbury in Northumberland Mariner and Marmaduke
Moore of Barwicke upon Tweede Mariner Sworne
before the Right Worshipfull William Clerke doctor of
lawes one of the Judges of the high Court of
Admiraltie of England say declare and depose by
Vertue of their respective oaths to them ministred upon
the holy Evangelist in manner and forme as followeth
videlicet
That in the moneth of Aprill 1654: last past hee the said
William Watts as Master and Commander of the said shipp the
hopewell of London did by the direction and order of his Owners
and Principalls sett sayle and depart from the Port of Lynne
with his said shipp and a lading of Corne bound for Mallega
Marsellis or Genoa or any other Commodious place for their
best markett in Spaine or Italie, and that in their Course
thitherwards the said shipp touched at Plymouth where the said
William Watts and Companie were informed That the peace
was concluded and agreed upon betwixt the English and hollanders
whereupon the said shipp under the Conduct of the said Master
and shipps Companie proceeded upon the said Voiage, and
upon or about the 5th or 6th day's of May 1654. off of the South
ward Cape they mett with a Turkes man of warr, and being
ready to engage in fight with the said man of warr they espied
about 4. or 5. sailes of shipps under the Lee of the saidshipp
towards which they made, as beleeving them to be Christians, [?as GUTTER]
they were, and found them to be part of the ffrench ffleete of [?men GUTTER]
of warr, and thereupon the said William Watts being Commander [?went GUTTER]
aboard the Admirall of that ffrench squadron, teh said William
Watts was by and aboard the said Admirall imployed [?XXX GUTTER]
