Abstract & context

This is a short letter from Sir George Smith to Sir George Oxenden to accompany a letter from the London merchant Sir John Lewys (alias Lewis). It was sent with the ship the Returne, on which Sir Gervase Lucas was travelling out to take up the Governorship of Bombay.

Sir George Smith makes brief reference to the death of Elizabeth Dallison, and her burial at Clerkenwell, at a funeral attended by family and friends.

Notes

  1. Sir John Lewys (b. ?, d. ?) was probably the London merchant Sir John Lewis, appointed knight and baronet in 1660). He was Master of the Ironmongers Company, 1657-58, a member of the Council of Trade in 1660, and of the Council of Foreign Plantations in 1661 (XXX Latham & XXX Mathews, XXXX (XXXX, XXXX), p. XX). See March 1665/66, Letter from John Lewis to Sir GO
  2. Sir Gervase Lucas was appointed Governor of Bombay on November 5th 1666, but died in office on May 21st 1667
  3. The Dallison families of Lincolnshire and Kent had a long association with Clerkenwell, with Dallison burials in Clerkenwell church dating back to the mid-sixteenth century. See House in St. John Street, Clerkenwell
