Biographical synthesis
Captaine Richard Ell (b. ca. 1600; d. ?). Mariner.
Commander of the ship the Prosperous, seized at Lisbon by General Blake.
Resident in 1650 in Twickenham and at the time of his death in 1677.

His will was proved on April 13th 1677, in which he describes himself as a gentleman of Twickenham.[2]
Evidence from High Court of Admiralty
September 1650
Fifty year old Richard Ell deposed on September 3rd 1650 in the High Court of Admiralty. He made a short statement regarding the seizure of his ship in "Quoad in nave the Prosperous of London (Richard Ell Captaine) per naves Parliamentarius sezite".[3]
December 1653
Fifty-four year old Captaine Richard Ell deposed on December 6th 1653 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation in the cause of "Gilbert Keate Thomas Jennings and company against a 16th part of the shipp the Prosperous and of her tackle furniture and apparrell lately belonging to Dixewell Brent did attached by Authority of this Court and against whatsoever freight due for the same and against [BLANK IN MANUSCRIPT] Brent the administrator of all and singular the good chattells and debts of the sayd Dixwell Brent not administred by [BLANK IN MANUSCRIPT] Brent the father and Administrator of the sayd Dixwell Brent in particular and all others in generall".[4]
