Notes
John Men(n)es
John Mennes appears to have been a minor poet and wanabee courtier in the 1620s and 1630s, to have been a loyal royalist in the civil war period, but to have prospered in the Restoration.
There is a good summary of Sir John Mennes’ later life post Restoration in Timothy Raylor, Later Lives, 1640-1671: Cavaliers, Clubs, and Literary Culture: Sir John Mennes, James Smith, and the Order of Fancy (?Wilmington, DL, 1994), pp. 211-212 [CHECK REFERENCE]
