Twenty-four year old William Newland deposed on November 21st 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on behalf of the mariners in the case of "Smith et alyn against Phillips"<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.639r Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.639r]]</ref>

William Newland stated that about three years ago he saw a "Dutch bottome" lying at Cowes on the Isle of Wight called the ''Joseph''. Theis ship had been brought into Cowes by a ship of war set out by Captaine Phillips. In September 1651, William Newland's father, also named William, of Newport in the Isle of Wight, bought the lading of rosin in the ship the ''Dolphin'', which was also brought in as prize by Captaine Phillips. Though his father had bought the rosin, Captaine Phillips' mariners wouldn't allow it to be delivered until they were paid their shares.<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.639r Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.639r]]</ref>
