==Biographical synthesis==
William Leatherman (b. 1628; d. ?). Mariner.

Brother-in-law of Thomas Partridge, the actual master of the ship the ''Adventure'' of Newcastle. He shipped master's mate, but took over at Hull from Thomas Partridge when "a fitt of sicknesse tooke the said Thomas at Hull which caused alsoe a lamenesse in one of his leggs, whereby hee was utterly disabled to proceede thence in the said shipp and was forced to stay there and to put his said brother master of her in his place".<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.610r Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.610r]]</ref>

Resident in 1655 in Woodbridge in the county of Suffolk.

==Evidence from High Court of Admiralty==
Twenty-seven year old William Leatherman deposed on August 25th 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined "On the behalfe of Thomas Partridge touching a losse of the ''Adventure'' of Newcastle".<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.592v Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.592v]]</ref>

The case concerned the ship the ''Adventure'' of Newcastle, which sailed from Hull to Rotterdam. On her return voyage from Rotterdam to Hartlepool she sprung an incurable leake "that albeit shee was plied with three pumpes eight and fourtie houres together by which her men were soe spent and tired that they were readie to dropp downe".<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.610r Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.610r]]</ref> The ship foundered and sank, but the crew saved themselves in the ship's boat.

William Leatherman stated that "hee well knew the shipp the ''Adventure interrogated'' whereof Thomas Partridge was master and soe knew her by the space of eight weekes or thereabouts before her miscariage hereafter mentioned, during which time hee served in her first as masters mate and then as master, the said Partridge falling sick and staying ashore at hill about seaven weekes before such her miscarriage or casting away, and this deponent thereupon taking charge of her there as master, and such his sicknesse being very violent and taking him alsoe with a lamenesse, disabled him the said Partridge to goe in her, and that was the reason of his not proceeding thence".<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.593r Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.593r]]</ref>
