IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN The sixthe day of December Anno Domini 1645 And in the twentieth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of god king of England Scotland France and Ireland defender of the Faith er. I Henry Barnard late cittizen and Innholder of London being in good and sound mynde and memory thanks be therefore given to Almighty god calling to mynde the uncertainty of this transitory life and how certaine wee are to dye And yet the tyme most undertaine doe make and ordaine my last will and testament in manner and forme following that is to say

FIRST I give and bequeath my soule into the hands of Almighty god my Creator hoping and stedfastly belleving by and through the merritts death and passion of my only Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to have full and free remission of all my sinnes and to see the Lord, in the land of the everliving, and my body I commit to the earth from whence it came to bee decently buried in the Church of the parish where it shall please god to call mee And I will and my mynde is and I doe hereby Charge myne executor that he doth not give any mourning apparrell to any but only to himselfe his wife and his two children, but for to give blacke ribbens at his owne will and pleasure I leave it to himselfe And if it shall please god that I shall dicease (sic) in Storford then I desire then I desire that M:r Fighter shall xx xxx bee there and will bury mee and preach at my funerall, if not hee then I desire M:r Wilson of Elsenham to preach my funerall sermon and see me buried & to which of them shall preach then and bury me do I give and will forty shillings over and besides the legacy hereunxder menconed to him And as touching and concerning the disposition of all such Earthly goods and possessions as it hath pleased god of his goodness to bestowe on mee and are in my power to dispose of I give and bequeath the same as followeth That is to say

FIRST I give and bequeath unto my five grandchildren namely Elizabeth Barnard and Em Barrnard the summe of five hundred pounds of good and lawfull money of England by even portions That is to say to eyther of them two hundred and fifty pounds to be paid within one yeare next after my decease unto the hands of M:r Jon Thromarten (sic) and M.r Roger Vevin (sic) to the use of the said children and to be by them or their assignes imployed and bestowed to and for the use and benefitt of the said two children untill they shall severally attayne the age of one and twentie yeares, or to the day of marriage which shall first come or bee, and then I will the same somme or porcon with the marriage and proffitt that shall aryse and be made thereof shalbe paid to eyther of them as shall come to her age or day of marriage first And if eyther of the said two children shall decease unmarried before she shall attaine her said age of twenty one yeares then I will that the survivour of them shall have the whole five hundred pounds & the increase & proffitt thereof And if they both shall decese before the same shalbe paid Then I will and devise the same unto my sonn Henry Barnard

ITEM I give and bequeath unto the foresaid Elizabeth Barnard my grandchild my oxxx gXXX to the value of five pounds or thereabouts and my Watch

ITEM I give unto my daughter Em Barnard my grandchild xxxx pounds, And I give and bequeath unto the poore people of Elsenham in the County of Essex tenne poundes of lawfull money and to the poore children of Christs Hospitall London five pounds
