Thirty-three year old John Johnson deposed on August 21st 1655 in the High Court of Admiralty.<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.569v Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.569v]]</ref> He was exammined on an allegation on behalf of in the cause of "Roger hatton Samuell ffoote and company owners of the ''Exeter Merchant'' of which Thomas Woodfin is master against the vessell the ''ffrancis and Mary'' of which Thomas Smith was master and against} the sayd Thomas Smith and alsoe against Arnold Beake and Company comming in for their interest".<ref>[[HCA 13/70 f.567v Annotate|HCA 13/70 f.567v]]</ref>
