==Biographical synthesis==
John Gates (b. ca. 1641; d. ?). Shipwright.

One of the carpenters of the ''Lady ffrigott'' in 1658. [[John Carrier]], a fellow deponent in the Admiralty Court, was carpenter's mate on the same ship.

Resident in 1659 in Deptford in the county of Kent.

==Evidence from High Court of Admiralty==
Eighteen year old John Gates deposed on June 4th 1659 in the High Court of Admiralty. He was examined on an allegation on behalf of Swift Parker Harris and Company and also Andrew Riccard and Company in "A business of examination of witnesses for perpetauall remembrance of the matter, on the part and behalfe of John Swift John Parker John Harris and Company owners of the shipp the ''Lady ffrigott'' whereof John Hosier was Master, and her tackle furniture apparell & freight, and of Andrew Riccard one of the Aldermen of the Cittie of London and Company, the Governor and Company of English merchants trading to the Mediterranian seas, owner of the goods in the sayd shipp against Hippolito Centurione of Genoa in particular and all others in generall which will take upon them to iustifie the seizing or takeing of the sayd shipp the ''Lady ffrigott'' and her ladeing"<ref>[[HCA 13/73 f.122r Annotate|HCA 13/73 f.122r]]</ref>

The case concerned the seizure of the ship the ''Lady ffrigott'', which had been in the Eastern Mediterranean on a voyage to load currants. The ship had been hired by Andrew Riccard and Company, London merchants. The ship was seized in November 1658 by a ship named the ''Santa Cruse'', which had been set out by a Genoese named Hippolito Centurione.
