Forty-two year old Johannes Basford deposed on August 2nd 1660 in the High Court of Admiralty. He stated that he was "a tobacconist and well skilled in tobaccoe" and that he had been employed by Harris and Beomant to "viewe about foure or five twenty hogsheads of Virginia tobaccoe belonging unto them lying in a celler in Saint Mary at Hill". According to Basford all but three of the hogsheads were dry and well conditioned and were very good sound tobaccoe.
