7. caused his skiff to bee hoisted out and therewith went aboard the sayd
8. Crofords shipp, but what conference they had togeather hee knoweth
9. not for that hee this deponent continued aboard the Recoverie, but
10. saith that after a while two of the sayd Crofords company (whereof one
11. was the sayd Crofords Mate) came with the sayd Bartlett aboard the
12. Recoverie to view the leakes and Condition of the sayd shipp Recovery
13. and did view and search the same, and upon view thereof did in
14. presence and hearing of this deponent and others of the Recoveries
15. Company advise the sayd Bartlett to beare up for some of
16. the neerest Islands, before hee were too farr gone from
17. them, and did in presence of this deponent and others whose names
18. are subscribed as wittnesses thereto give a testimoniall under
19. their hands that in their Judgment the sayd shipp Recovery was
20. soe leakie that shee was insufficient to proceede home for
21. England without being amended, which testimoniall being made
22. the sayd Crofords two men went aboard their owne shipp againe,
23. and then the sayd Bartletts men thereupon urged the Master to
24. beare up for the first ˹Christian shoare˺ they could make to whereto the Master
25. replyed whether would you have mee goe, and the shipps Company then
26. cryed to the Barbados if wee can fetch it, if not to some of thee
27. Leeward Islands, (meaning ˹as hee beleeveth˺ Antego or some other of the Leeward
28. Islands) that wee may repayre our shipp and save our lives and
29. ladeing or to that effect, whereto the sayd Bartlett answered thus or
30. to the like effect noe, wee will make for Bermudas, whereto
31. the shipps company replyed to this effecte, Bermudas is a dangerous
32. place now in Winter tyme to get in at if the shipp would hold out soe
33. farr, and wee are soe warye with continuall pumpeing that wee
34. cannot hold out soe farr, whereto the sayd Bartlet replyed and sayed
35. then I will goe for new England where I am acquainted, and if I
36. can reach thither I shall there fitt my shipp, whereupon the shipps
37. Company considering the length of the voyage thither (it being about
38. sixe or eight hundred leagues thither) and the insufficiencie of the sayd
39. shipp and her rigging to brooke for soe longe a voyage in the winter tyme
40. ˹and the dangerousnesse of that coast˺ sayd they might as well venter to goe to Old England as to goe thither,
