- The database is the creation of Bruce M. S. Campbell, Professor of Medieval Economic History within the School of Geography, Archaeology, and Palaeoecology at The Queen’s University of Belfast (QUB).
- The “Database” may be searched by crop, harvest year, manor, estate, county, region, and any combination of the same. All that is required is that users identify themselves by registering. The yields given are yields per seed, gross of tithe (assumed to have been every tenth sheaf deducted in the field) and net of seed. The database cannot be amended but a “Wiki” page is available where any corrections and additions can be noted along with other relevant comments. It is anticipated that the database will be corrected, added to, and extended as more data become available. Meanwhile, the “Chronologies” facility offers a series of reconstructed annual chronologies for each of the principal crops and combinations of the same. These have no counterpart for any other country or period before the 19th century and will be of particular value to archaeologists, historians, economists, environmentalists, and agronomists. They have been derived from the spatially and chronologically discontinuous raw yield data using the regression facility available within the STATA statistical software package.

This page provides occasional updates on new work on primary documents. The updates are principally reports of newly identified primary sources of relevance to the wiki. This page does not report the completion and posting of new transcriptions of primary documents, which is an ongoing process.

The focus of work on the wiki for the last two months has been on the structure, the functionality and the look and feel of the wiki, rather than on new primary document content.

The acquisition of primary documents involves imaging the documents digitally where possible, followed by their summary and possible transcription. Digital images are held offline, unless otherwise noted and the licence conditions with the holders of the original documents permit. Some summaries and transcriptions have been posted to this wiki as examples of document types.

* Tobell Aylmer was a successful merchant, as can be judged by the size, furnishing and interior decoration of his London house at the time of his death. Aylmer's business papers and accounts have not survived. However, a number of Chancery records have been located for several different legal actions in which he was involved. All of these actions involved property, and it appears that Aylmer was active in lending to agricultural property owners who were in financial distress. Furthermore, at the time of his death, Aylmer owned a number of London and suburban properties, as can be seen in the [[MRP: Tobell Aylmer will|Tobell Aylmer will]], including a house in Ludgate Hill, a further house where he lived, five small houses in Clarke Raven Alley, Creechurch, the lease of the Chequer in Dowgate, and and lands at Snowhill, Holborn conduit. These were valued at £XXX in his inventory.

The bill of complaint of Edward Clovile, Tobell Aylmer ''et al'' [[MRP: C10/5/21 f. 1|C10/5/21 f. 1]] (1649) shows Tobell Aylmer in a joint action with Edward Clovyle, the owner of a manor house and land in Essex, pursuing a series of writs and judgements in the court of the Upper Bench<ref>The court of the King's Bench was renamed the court of the Upper Bench following the execution of Charles I in 1649</ref> to obtain possession of the above property from a prior lessee of Clovyle. The lessee, Thomas Barker, a gentleman of West Hanningfield, had allegedly fallen into rental arrears, yet had refused to yield possession. The plaintiffs had successfully sought a writ of habere facias possessionem; possession was briefly achieved, only to be lost six weeks later due supposedly to the neglect of Aylmer's attorney to correctly register in due time a favourable court judgement. The defendant was accused then of launching many frivolous and vexatious suits of clausem frigit designed to push up the plaintiffs legal costs, who sought an injunction in the Court of Chancery to halt these suits. A further complication was that Clovyle claimed to have lost the conterpart to his original lease of Barker, rendering a solution impossible under common law. Hence the plaintiffs sought a writ of subpoena in addition to the above mentioned injunction to require Barker to disclose the whereabouts of the lease.

The answer of Thomas Barker to Clovile and Aylmer ''et al's'' Bill of Complaint [[MRP: C10/5/21 f. 2|C10/5/21 f. 2]] (1649) offers a very different story. The true facts of the case are impossible to ascertain from the documentation, but Barker's detailed answer suggests that at the very least that Clovile and Aylmer were engaged in sharp practice. Barker claimed he had received a writ of elegit obtained by a Thomas Browne in the Court of Common Pleas against Edward Clovile, and after consulting counsel, had attorned to Browne, and had begun lawfully to pay him rent, rather than Ailmer. Browne had achieved this writ as a result of a debt of £400 plus interest and expenses owing to him from Clovile. Following his ejectment by Clovile and Ailmer, Barker claimed that the court of the Upper Bench had reconsidered matters, appointing a Mr. Hoddesdon, secondary to the court, to meet with the parties and to consider the proceedings in the case. Hoddesdon had, it was claimed by Barker, found "the practizes in the businesse for gayninge of the said possession to bee soe undue and Indirect" that the court granted a writ of restitution, and possession was restored to Barker. It was alleged that a "loose idle clerke" had indeed enrolled the judgement, but that he was not admitted to practice nor to come into the office of the Court of Upper Bench, and that he secretly, without a warrant, entered the judgement on an attorney's roll who had not been privy nor had given his consent to the action. Matters escalated, with Baker alleging that he had been unlawfully imprisoned by the plaintiffs and forced under duress to sign a warrant yielding possession, which he subsequently revoked on the advice of his counsel. Baker resorted to an emergency appearance before the Lord Chief Justice of the Upper Bench, Henry Rolle.

A later suit [[MRP: C6/130/5 f. 1|C6/130/5 f. 1]] (1654) shows Tobell Aylmer complaining against his former co-litigant Edward Clovyle over the same property. Aylmer had still failed to achieve possession of the manor house and was seeking a writ of elegit to take possession of the lands, to be followed by the issue by a sherrif of a writ of fieri facias.

The authors of this wiki need help with primary research and synthesis for a wide range of buildings, places, and areas. The focus should be on the period 1650-1659, and on working from contemporary primary sources, rather than from modern secondary sources.

Contributions are particularly welcome from Arabic, Dutch, Italian, Gujarati, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish speakers, using seventeenth century primary sources authored in a range of languages.

Topics to explore include:

- Ports and towns in continental Europe (excluding the European territories of the Ottoman Empire)
- Ports and towns in the former Ottoman Empire
- Ports and towns on the west coast of India
- Ports and towns around the Arabian Gulf
- Islands, ports and towns of Barbados and Jamaica
- Plantations and ports of Virginia and New England
- English private and public buildings
- English rural and urban local areas

Ideally, the end product would ideally be a profile of the specified place, integrating an understanding of place and its geographical interconnections with the core individuals around which this wiki has been built - [[MRP: Sir George Oxenden|Sir George Oxenden]], the subscribers in the mid-1650s to the [[MRP: Smirna Venture Joint Stock subscriber list| Smirna Venture Joint Stock]] and the [[MRP: King Fernandez subscriber list| King Fernandez Joint Stock]], and [[MRP: Correspondence of Sir George Oxenden, 1663-1669 (British Library, Add. The last night at 9: of y:e Clocke, Coz:n Rich:d Hardresse<ref>Richard Hardres, son of Sir Richard Hardres, had been due to travel to Surat with Sir George Oxenden and his fellow cousins Henry Oxenden and Streynsham Master. However, he had missed the departing ship. After considerable efforts by Elizabeth Dallison and others with committee members of the East India Company he had been permitted to travel out on a subsequent ship. Naturally cautious as a result of his prior expereince, he is described by James Master in this letter as a "burnt child"</ref> came to Towne deasigndd then for Deale & was very earnest for all y:e papers & lres belonging to you, & though I used many arguments y:t y:e Ship Could not bee then in y:e Downes, the Burnt Child did dread the fire, & hee would not beleeve, but goo & see; upon w:ch I huddeled [?] up yo:r lres & finished them in an ample manner as you will finde, but expecting y:e hasty Gentleman this morning againe; for hee said hee would returne if y:e Shipps weare not in y:e Downes) I have sett pen to paper once more in order to some further Information in yo:r busyeness; & it is Concerning y:e perticulers of yo:r goods bought & sould, w:ch may bee very many & intangle & en-large, the Depositions much.
